Adult Driver Education Program Description

Having a driver’s license is nearly a necessity to get to work, school, and to go shopping. Road-Ready’s program provides adult students with a thorough understanding of Nebraska motor vehicle rules and the national standards to help new drivers become confident, safe, and courteous drivers. Road-Ready’s friendly customer service staff works with students to schedule behind-the-wheel driving lessons with our licensed, professionally trained driving instructors at times that fit the students’ busy schedules.

Classroom:

Every adult student without a Nebraska drivers license must complete a required six-hour class before beginning the driving portion of the program. Our classroom instruction helps students understand the risks involved with driving and techniques to manage those risks. The class will give more complex instruction than the basics in the "Nebraska Driver’s Manual”. Discussions of the following subjects will be included:

•    Managing risk when driving

•    Getting acquainted with vehicle controls

•    Understanding vehicle space needs and physical forces of driving

•    Starting, steering, and stopping the vehicle

•    Traffic control devices

•    Traffic laws

•    Vision and perception

•    Managing time and space

•    Basic maneuvers: turning, lane changing

•    Perpendicular, angled, and parallel parking

English as a Second Language

If the student does not understand fluent English, they must provide a translator for the classroom and each of the driving lessons. This will help ensure a better understanding of traffic operations, without trying to understand the English language at the same time.

Classroom Attendance

Students must be on time for their classes and each class will last the full 2 hours. It is imperative the student meet the minimum hours required by state government rules.

Behind-The-Wheel Training:

Road-Ready has developed the hands-on part of the program to move students progressively from core fundamentals of driving in low-risk conditions to feeling comfortable and confident in more complex driving situations. In our structured teachings, we have developed driving routes to accomplish certain goals and to insure the time is used productively to help the student become an improved driver. Our approach allows us to evaluate every aspect of the student's driving techniques and improve skills or correct bad habits early. Examples of our progression would include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Introduction to Driving: Adjusting the fit of the vehicle, explanation of the vehicle controls and gauges, steering technique, acceleration and braking control, right and left turns in residential areas, traffic controls, and right of way.
  • Moderate City Driving: Review right and left turns, intersections with traffic signals, shared turn lanes, left turns at traffic signals, school zones, crosswalks, multi-lane roads, lane changing, roundabouts, low-traffic expressway, railroad crossings, bike crossings, and low-traffic one-way streets.
  • Downtown City Driving: One-way streets, lane changing, planning ahead, interacting with pedestrians and bicycles, negotiating bus and bike lanes, multiple turning lanes, multi-lane roundabouts, and a short introduction to expressway/freeway.
  • Highway, Expressway, and Freeway Driving: Review turning at traffic signals, lane changing, highways inside the city, expressway driving, emergency roadside stop, off-road recovery, county highways, gravel roads, entering and exiting freeways, merging traffic, and weave lanes.
  • Parking: Review one-way streets, curb parking, perpendicular parking, angled parking, and parallel parking between vehicles.

Driving Appointments:  In vehicle driving appointments are scheduled to take place after the 6 hours of classroom is finished. Driving appointments must be rescheduled or canceled one business day before the scheduled appointment date. Appointment failures or late cancelations will be assessed a $30.00 fee.

The number of lessons needed to progress for a complete course can depend on a student's past driving experience, their ability to practice between lessons, and the general comfort level in driving. If the student believes they will need additional lessons, our school offers programs that increase driving time at a discounted cost if purchased at the time of registration. A student also can purchase additional driving lessons later if needed.
